A week or so ago, I ended up taking the bus to work because Mom had to be elsewhere (with the car) at the same time. On the way there, this involved at least as much sitting and waiting at bus stops as actual riding of buses. So, needing something to do (and realising that, unusually enough, I was somewhere where there were people I didn't know (yes, it's been a quiet summer)), I spent the time waiting for the first bus making a mini smile sign (letters almost full size, no margins) on bright yellow paper that I pulled out of the bottom of my purse. The stop for my second bus was right before a medium-busy intersection, so I could sit there with the smile sign, and read while the cars zoomed past, and then the light would turn red, traffic backed up next to the bus stop, and there while they're waiting for that red light to change so they can hurry on their way, there's a sign that says SMILE... and they do.
I think I'm going to back that sign with cardboard so it's not so floppy, and keep it in my purse so next time I look around and go "I should have brought the smile sign, this would be a good place for it" I don't have to choose between making a new one or ignoring the thought.
